Creating stand out content openings
The Big Learn from this session is that instead of resorting to cliches, or simply copying people for the wrong reasons, you start to work with Purpose Statements.
Hi Guys, Scott here, from Studiobiz, at the Birmingham Trade Show. How’s it all going out there in Social Media Land?
Be assured, if you feel natural when you say this kind of thing, and you connect well with your audience…then what’s not to love? I’m simply trying to offer options here, to help you start with impact, so that your audience will feel like they’re going somewhere with you.
HERE’S WHAT WE DID IN CLASS
A SmartPhone camera is set up on a tripod and the group is told that they will come up one by one and record a piece to camera.
How do you feel now?
If you’ve attended the Live Course, you will be aware of: Force | Fidget | Freeze but you will realise now that you never, ever get rid of it. You simply manage it as all performers have done since we sat round the fire and told stories, since we got up in front of the people to preach, since we looked into the lens and reached out into the darkness.
If you’ve got to this point having followed along with the lessons, you might still be nervously thinking “what on earth is he going to ask me to do now?”
You are not alone.
Back to the class.
We did a huge amount of research and we found this to be one of the most popular lines that people use to start their videos…
Hi guys…it’s Scott Ransome here….from Studiobiz….I’m at the tech trade show here at the NEC Birmingham and it’s great to be here…
In other words…people will tend to say
- Who they are
- Where they work
- Where they are at that moment
- and indicate how they are feeling (often delighted, excited or privileged)
If you’re thinking…
Well it’s clear who I am and where I work, because that’s on the Social Media platform i’m using to broadcast this content. It may also be clear where I am because…well, there’s a sign on the building behind me…and it’s in shot And do people really believe I feel privileged to be here?
If you attended our Live Course, you will remember that we gave you a copy of the text on a card.
Hi guys…it’s (insert your own name) here….from (Insert yur company here)….I’m at the tech trade show here at the NEC Birmingham and it’s great to be here.
We did this to avoid the additional pressure of trying to remember your line as you delivered your first piece to camera.
Mind you, it’s a twitchy enough moment anyway.
If you’re doing this as a solo exercise at home and not really feeling anything…put the card down and see how that feels.
This is what a good few auditions for professional acting work can feel like…one of my toughest was an advert audition with big crowd all sat around like this…director and crew, a bunch of agency people and a group of clients…and they all continued to talk while i mimed the shock and horror of dropping my car keys down a toilet.
The director was a only a gnats crotchet older than me…but he was so…in…with all the other people in the room Not my favourite moment in my existence so far…but they’ve made for a good story.
ADD IN PURPOSE STATEMENT GUIDELIINES
Well played everyone for getting up and having a go…becoming fearless when scared…
How’s about that line though?
“hi Guys…”
THE PRESTIGE
“HI GUYS…” COLLAGE SCHTICK
There’s comfort in cliches. When we know what’s coming and what to expect.
But know that everyone does them…and Purpose
To finish…start with one word…simply one…
